Some questions to ask about humane treatment of rodents bred for prey:

• How are the animals housed? How often are their bins cleaned? Is there overcrowding? Is there any type of environmental enrichment to alleviate stress?
• How often and how frequently is the same Doe bred before "retirement".
• What are the animals fed? Do they have constant access to fresh food and water?
• Who is the veterinarian the breeder consults when health issues arise? (Get a telephone number and call the vet for reference).
• How are the animals slaughtered? Has the staff had veterinary-quality training in the humane methods for killing rodents? (See latest info on CO2, Carbon Dioxide)

Don't be fooled by claims of USDA certification or licensing! Rats and mice are not currently covered under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), and rat and mouse breeders (feeders or pets) are not currently inspected by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Proposed changes to the AWA may affect rat and mouse breeders, but only if they cannot comply with the resulting regulations for humane treatment of rats and mice.
